DECEMBER 5, 2014 | Festival of Lights

DECEMBER 5, 2014 | 7:30 PM | MISISON SANTA CLARA – SANTA CLARA, CA
SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY CHOIRS – FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

I am beginning my second year at Santa Clara University with a concert built around a pair of Magnificats. After my experience with Bach at the Oregon Bach Festival, I wanted to make sure I did some Baroque music this year, and I think Durante’s (often thought of as Pergolesi’s) Magnificat is a perfect piece for everyone at SCU to be able to do. We’ll be doing that work with portativ organ and string quintet – soloists coming from the choir. In the second half, we open with Arvo Pärt’s Magnificat, a piece I’ve wanted to do ever since I heard the incredible recording of it by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. Wow… that’s good. We’ll also be doing the US Premiere of Cecilia McDowall’s Ad Lucem: A Canticle of Light for soprano soloist, choir, and string orchestra. Our soprano will be an alum of SCU who I met at OBF, Madeline Bersamina. She’s fantastic, so I’m excited to work with her and she will also lend her voice to an Abbie Betinis composition, Behind the Clouds.
