In the grand culmination of our season, the Santa Clara Chorale premiers the oratorio Barbara Allen, by contemporary composer Scott Gendel. This new work takes the traditional folk ballad as a starting point for a wild, nearly operatic, journey that uses a huge array of musical textures to expand “Barbara Allen” into an emotional tour-de-force. Joining with tenor Brian Thorsett, the San José Chamber Orchestra, and the Santa Clara University Choirs, the Chorale embarks on a symphonic exploration of love and loss in a musical experience that brings oratorio into a new realm.

The songs in this concert about mythical creatures and daring feats appeal to the young and young-at-heart. The centerpiece of the program is John Rutter’s The Reluctant Dragonabout a dragon who would rather write verse than breathe destructive fire. Music about other fanciful creatures, songs from Man of La Mancha, and selections from the contemporary choral repertoire round out a program perfect for all — both the first time concert-goer as well as the experienced choral veteran. The performance at Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church will include young singers from The Music School.

The chorale performs four concerts of American and Spanish repertoire across the south of Spain, including a performance in the Gothic Cathedral in Barcelona and a shared concert with the Coral de Catedra “Ramón Medina”del Liceo de Córdoba.

The SCU Concert Choir and Chamber Singers team up with the SCU Orchestra in a wide ranging program to close out the academic year. Featuring selections from Jocelyn Hagen’s requiem, Ashes of Roses, Mozart’s requiem, Andres Solis’ requiem: XLIII, and Palestrina’s Missa pro Defunctis, the program delivers requiem repertoire from its earliest form to present day.

Featuring an all ages Friday evening and Sunday afternoon show, our March concert focused on music written early in the career of composers throughout history. Included were the first choral compositions of W.A. Mozart including pieces written at age 9, 10, and 12. Also featured were some younger contemporary composers including Abbie Betinis and a joint commission by Richard Waters based on the poem Star light, Star bright with latin text by Charles Silvestri.

A World Premiere performance of a new Requiem in collaboration with the Montalvo Arts Center featuring dancer Sandra Milean Gómez, Electronic musician and composer Andres Solis, organist James Welch, and the Santa Clara University Chamber Singers. The work remembers those victims of violence in Mexico and will be paired with a variety of events that raise awareness of the violence happening in our neighboring country.

Described by the composer as the last sins of his old age, Napoleon III characterized Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle as neither little, nor solemn, nor particularly liturgical. Rossini combines the Latin mass with the musical language of comic opera, featuring a work scored for piano and harmonium (a reed organ operated by bellows) and with extended operatic vocal solos throughout.
