May 12, 2017 – 8pm – Gendel Barbara Allen [WORLD PREMIERE]

The season begins with a bang! Using the model of presenting mini-masterworks as we did with the Rossini this past season, the chorale will perform Orff’s Carmina Burana (for two pianos and percussion). The season closes with the amazing opportunity to bring a new work to performance. Composer Scott Gendel will compose a concert length oratorio for the chorale to premiere based on the folk song Barbara Allen. The work uses the story of the traditional song, but is not just a mere arrangement, instead it takes the text as a launching off point and builds the story up into an oratorio of biblical proportions.

Between these two incredibly exciting events, we will continue what is becoming a tradition for Santa Clara by involving the community in a joyous and reflective set of holiday concerts featuring readers from the local community who contextualize new and familiar repertoire. Our March performance combines the rigor of repertoire the Chorale is known for with the approachable programming we saw in Wild Things. The concert will feature Rutter’s semi-staged entertainment originally premiered by the King’s Singers, The Reluctant Dragon, songs from Man of La Mancha, and other fanciful pieces.
