In the grand culmination of our season, the Santa Clara Chorale premiers the oratorio Barbara Allen, by contemporary composer Scott Gendel. This new work takes the traditional folk ballad as a starting point for a wild, nearly operatic, journey that uses a huge array of musical textures to expand “Barbara Allen” into an emotional tour-de-force. Joining with tenor Brian Thorsett, the San José Chamber Orchestra, and the Santa Clara University Choirs, the Chorale embarks on a symphonic exploration of love and loss in a musical experience that brings oratorio into a new realm.

The songs in this concert about mythical creatures and daring feats appeal to the young and young-at-heart. The centerpiece of the program is John Rutter’s The Reluctant Dragonabout a dragon who would rather write verse than breathe destructive fire. Music about other fanciful creatures, songs from Man of La Mancha, and selections from the contemporary choral repertoire round out a program perfect for all — both the first time concert-goer as well as the experienced choral veteran. The performance at Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church will include young singers from The Music School.
